Utah

The Beehive State is one of the Four Corners states, bordering Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada at the same point in southeast Utah. From Bryce Canyon, Arches, and Zion National Parks to the desolation of the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah is incomparable in its variety of natural beauty. The name Utah comes from the Ute Indians and means “people of the mountains” -- the Wasatch Range, a series of mountains running like a spine down the center of the state. Mormons, led West by Brigham Young, settled the Salt Lake Valley in the mid-1800s. Farming in Utah’s harsh desert environment was difficult for these early settlers until irrigation could be harnessed to water the crops. Cherries are Utah’s official state fruit. The Spanish onion is the state vegetable. Honey is also a major commodity, and the beehive is the state emblem of Utah, symbolizing the industrious ways of the honeybee. Gelatin dessert is the official state snack of Utah. Utahans also enjoy a kind of unique scone. Unlike the dense, baked British version, Utah scones are airy, sweet, and deep-fried and are often served with butter and honey, like a sopapilla.

Simple Whole Wheat Bread

Reviewed on Aug. 27, 2008 by Lauraloves2run
This bread is heaven sent. I followed the recipe exactly and it was so good! (I'm not the world's best bread maker either.) I think I'm going to make this every week and play with it. Thanks so much!

Awesome Egg Rolls

Reviewed on Aug. 27, 2008 by KISSTHECOOKAGAIN
I've never made egg rolls...in fact, I think this was my first time frying anything. They are so good. Just make sure you have mouths to eat them. It was just me and my husband and we overate...talk about a gut bomb. Maybe we aren't used to so much fried food. They are so good though. I served them with sweet and sour sauce and froze half the batch. I wish I'd tried brushing w/ olive oil and baking because that sounds like it might work out. These really are WAY better than any egg roll I've had a restaurant.

Saltine Toffee Cookies

Reviewed on Aug. 27, 2008 by KISSTHECOOKAGAIN
DO NOT STIR THE BUTTER AND BROWN SUGAR WHILE IT BOILS!!!!!! I have never made toffee before and I didn't know this. It really should say this in the recipe because they don't turn out like toffee skor bars...more like carmel. They are chewy. I was so disappointed that after I read reviews and realized not to stir the butter and brown sugar (I stirred it a lot, afraid it would burn) I decided to make another half batch just to make sure that was the problem. I also baked them for 7-8 minutes compared with my 4-5 on the first batch. THEY ARE INCREDIBLE, AS LONG AS YOU DON'T STIR!!!! I wish I had known. These taste like Skor candy bars. I sprinkled just a tiny bit of finely crushed pecans on top and they are delish!
